Dom Perignon

Champagne

Country: France
Region: Champagne
Store: Acker Merrall & Condit
Year: N/A

Winemaker's notes:
In the 17th century, Dom Pierre Pérignon, the cellar master of the Abbey of Hautvillers in Epernay, developed a wine whose extraordinary quality would make him the spiritual father of Champagne and one of the great visionaries of the winemaking world. Dom Pérignon longed to produce the "best wine in the world" and there is much written testimony to the success of Dom Pérignon's wine with the most noble and wealthy personalities of the era.

Dom Pérignon was one of the very first producers to assemble wines starting with the grapes, as well as the first to master the production of white wines from red grapes to achieve a giant leap forward in quality. Made exclusively from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes from ten Grand Cru vineyards and from the oldest vines at the Abbey of Hautvillers, Dom Pérignon is produced only in exceptional vintage years.

The 1999 Harvest:
Changeable, often unexpected, weather. Average temperatures were high and a very dry period gave way to almost tropical conditions in late summer, with strong winds and frequent hailstorms. The rainfall during harvesting did not affect this healthy and abundant crop with an exceptionally powerful and well-rounded character.

On The Nose:
This wine is full of life, with a fresh nose that dances through a spiral of aromas, blending hints of angelica, dried flowers, pineapple, coconut, cinnamon, cocoa and tobacco.

In The Mouth:
With a fullness in the mouth, its earthy, smoky, pearly complexity rises to the surface, underscored by the vibrant warmth of peppery spice. The sensation of intensity develops and melts into a deep, rounded heart, with a fruity, exotic maturity and a slight touch of aniseed. This sensation, almost unsettling, is even more pronounced in the finish, while the notes of spice, still present, remain discreet, with toasted, iodine flavors.

Cote' EST - CATALAN
Price: $10.99
Type: Grenache
Color: White
Country: France
Region: Catalan
Store: Acker Merrall & Condit
Year: 2008

It's not surprising that a collaboration between Jean-Marc Lafage and Eric Solomon would produce a wine this enjoyable. The two also produce the wonderful Las Rocas Garnacha.  A blend of 50% old vine Grenache Blanc & Gris / 30% Chardonnay / 20% Marsanne, all from Roussillon in French Catalan, the '08 côté EST is crisp, juicy & minerally with abundant ripe peach, apricot & honey flavors. Vibrant, rich on the palate and highly aromatic with citrus and white flowers. Finishes clean and dry. Amazing value.

Chateau Montelena

Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
Price: $109.99
Type: Cabernet Sauvignon
Color: Red
Country: United States
Region: Napa Valley
Store: Acker Merrall & Condit
Year: 2003

"While the 2002, which was quite extroverted right before bottling, has shut down, the 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is still open-knit, although I suspect it will probably close down as well. It exhibits an opaque ruby/purple color along with a sweet, spicy nose of black currants, licorice, herbs, and damp earth. Rich and concentrated, it is the most accessible, and possibly the most elegant and French-oriented of the Cabernets produced between 2002 and 2004. This top-notch effort should be cellared for 2-3 years, and consumed over the following 20-25 years. I have most Montelena Cabernets in my cellar (one of my friends has all of them), but at the end of the tasting, just to prove what aging potential these wines have, we did a blind tasting of a wine I rated 93 and guessed to be a very ripe year such as 1984 or 1990. It turned out to be the 1976 Cabernet Sauvignon North Coast, an amazingly rich wine offering loads of cedar, spice box, and mature Cabernet flavors, a wonderful, sweet, fleshy mid-palate, and beautiful ripeness in the finish. This is another example of why Chateau Montelena over the last thirty years has been the most consistently fine producer of top-flight, world-class Napa Cabernet Sauvignon! "  93 Points - Robert Parker (Wine Advocate)
