We recently visited the Borghese Vineyard and Winery in Cutchoge for a Friday night comedy show followed by a the Winemaker's Tour and Tasting on Saturday afternoon.
The "East End's Comedy Night" may not be what you would expect from your typical winery, but it turned out to be a fantastic evening. We had already picked out our favorite wines at the tasting, so we knew what bottles to get for the comedy show. The comedians were great and I laughed harder than most of the comedy shows I have been to in the city.
In addition to the wine and comedy the very gracious waitresses served four different types of pizza. The pizzas were made earlier by Marco Borghese himself and baked in an oven in the winery. I highly recommend the potato, onion and rosemary pizza. You might even want two!
On Saturday we did the winemaker's tour given by Ann Marie. She gave us an entertaining background history of the property and really personalized our experience at the winery. The oldest vines on Long Island grow on the property, Sauvignon Blanc grapes that go into the very tasty Founders Field Sauvignon Blanc.
The history of the farm and winery was very educational. One of the interesting notes was that during the Prohibition years, on what then was a potato farm, the 18th century barn that now houses their winery and cellar had a secret underground room for hiding liquor. After the tour it was back to the tasting room for more samples. In addition to the Sauvignon Blanc, my husband also enjoyed the Pinot Noir, another wine for which the Borghese Vineyard is known.
Overall, this winery alone makes the North Fork of Long Island a top destination in the US for any wine enthusiast.
